We drove into Pula, Croatia, the next morning.  Pula has a long history and is full of old Roman ruins.  Again, the Stutz family had seen a little of Pula with Mark and Jennifer the past April.  However, we had arrived late at night, and had only seen the amphitheater (gloriously lit) from the outside.  Knowing it was worth much more than that, Susan had decided it was a must-return with other members of the family.

The amphitheater at Pula was constructed in the 1st century and was used for only a few years as a gladiators' arena.

That was outlawed by a newly Christian emperor (thank goodness!!) and sports exhibitions dominated its history.

It is a fantastic monument that has withstood incredible ravages of time.  We thoroughly enjoyed our morning exploring the ins and outs of the arena.

Susan especially enjoyed the basement area where there was an exhibit about olive growing (loved the terra-cotta jars) and wine production.
