Edirne was our first stop in Turkey
and it was very much a road less travelled. Few in town spoke English and
people were thrilled to figure out we were foreigners visiting for our
holiday. Edirne seems to be only visited by those who have an interest
in history, architecture and mosques (which we do). It was the capital
of the Ottoman Empire before Istanbul took that honor, and retains much
cultural and historical significance for the Turks. Since we were in Edirne
over Christmas (December 24th and 25th), we landed right in the middle
of Muslim celebrations of Jesus' birth.
