Cairo: Al-Azhar Mosque

The mosque and university - over a thousand years old - is one of the oldest in the world. It is a center of Egyptian learning and our first stop on an afternoon trek.

Wandering in through its cloistered arches, we got a feeling of the rhythm of life. Away from the hustle and bustle of the streets, learning and contemplation took front stage.
We were able, for a little baksheesh, to climb up the stairway and look out over the rooftops of Cairo. Seeing all the buildings crowded together got us excited about exploring more, and we were soon off to the markets...
