Patterns of minority treatment

Directions:

  • Divide your paper into 3 columns - make the middle one the widest (about twice as wide as the others) - and label them Terms, Definitions, and Examples
  • Arrange group 1 in descending order in the middle column, from treatment that is least to most repressive. 
  • Then match the terms from group 2 with the definitions, writing them in the first column
  • Finally, match the examples from group 3 with the terms and their definitions, putting them in the third column.

Group 1

  • All groups within society are allowed to keep their own unique identities
  • Contact between specific cultural groups is forbidden
  • Culturally distinct groups are blended into a single (new) group with a common culture & identity
  • Culturally distinct groups conform to the folkways and mores of the dominant group
  • Groups are controlled through force, the most extreme form of which is slavery
  • Groups are targeted for systematic elimination, the most extreme of which is genocide
  • Minority groups are protected through laws, programs, and policies
  • Minority populations are transferred to new territories or new locations in the country

  • Great Britain, the United States
  • Jews in Europe, African Americans, Apartheid
  • Jews in Russia, Jews & Gypsies in Nazi Germany, Non-Serbs in Bosnia-Herzogovina
  • Mexico, Brazil
  • Native Americans, Japanese Americans, India
  • South Africa (apartheid), Jim Crow laws, caste system in India
  • Switzerland, Canada
  • Turks in Bulgaria, Spanish and Native Americans in Latin America
