In a class such as world affairs, keeping in touch with the world outside
Rochester is vitally important. To encourage the acquisition of such 'worldly
wisdom,' you have 3 assignments that will continue through the semester:
News Article
Assignment
Every week, you are expected to read and analyze
1 news article relating to international affairs. The weekly topic will
be chosen by Mr. Stutz and presented to the class on Monday. To document
your work, the following is required to be recorded on a page in your 3
ring binder:
-
A copy of the article you read, including
the date of publication
-
A summary of the main points
-
Who is involved - individuals, groups,
nation-states, etc
-
Where the event took place
-
When it happened
-
What happened - a factual summary
-
Why it happened - a review of the circumstances
leading to the event
You will need to record 1 article for every
week (Sunday through Saturday) of the semester.
Current weekly topics are listed on the
assignments
page
Newspaper
Reading Time
Each Monday, the class will have 20 minutes
of silent newspaper reading time. I will supply the newspapers, you will
supply the silent reading. You are, of course, expected to use this time
as an opportunity to catch up on international events taking place in the
world around us and not to get the scores from the ball games. This is
also not the time to be completing the news article assignment
Weekly
News Quiz
Each week you will have a 10-20 question quiz
on current events. While most of these will center on international news,
there will also be questions about national and local events also. The
best way to prepare? Watch and read the news daily.
