Sociology Culture Comparison

We have a wealth of sociology-related resources right here at JM:

YOU!!

This project will take a look at the components of culture and how you bring them with you into this classroom and the world.

The project will consist of 5 parts:

    • Brainstorming
    • Compare/Contrast - creating an artifact
    • Totem
    • Presentation
Brainstorm: meet and introduce yourselves to your group members. Establish knowledge of your national backgrounds as well as other pertinent information. Brainstorm a rough list of symbols, values, folkways, and mores from all members of the group. Be sure to examine elements of personal identity as well (those traditions that you, your family, or your peer group observe that do not necessarily represent the larger cultural norms)

Compare/Contrast: Develop a physical artifact that incorporates an analysis of both the similarities and differences between the cultures present in your group. You should examine no fewer than 2 examples in each of the components of culture (1 similarity and 1 difference) for each cultural type in your group. This will be presented to the class.

Totem: Devise a totem for your group. Remember to incorporate values, traditions, and mores from all members. This should be designed as a separate display, similar to a logo.

Yummy: Make something yummy from your culture and bring it in to share.

Presentation: Display and explain your artifact to the class. Each member of the group will receive an individual grade for their participation. Please see the rubric for more detail.

TOTAL = 78 POINTS
