What is the Norm?
  • In the United States, 93 percent of women deliver with a physician in a hospital.  Only 6.5 percent choose to work with a midwife.  Of that percentage, 95 percent use a certified nurse midwife in a hospital and less than 5 percent select a homebirth.  However, recent data suggests the use of midwives is on the rise;  5 percent represents over a  60 percent increase since the late 1970's!

  • Over 30 percent of women in the Netherlands give birth at home and, in New Zealand, almost 70 percent of women use a midwife.

  • In 1996, The World Health Organization submitted a formal statement to the United Nations encouraging the use of professional midwives.
