Making a room map
1) Measure the room
-
Make sure that you use consistent units (preferably
centimeters)
-
Measure the walls, doors, windows, etc.
-
Measure the pieces of furniture that you will
include on your map
2) Make a scale
-
Sketch the longest wall. Write the measured
length (real size) next to it
-
Measure the wall on the map (find the map
size)
-
Make sure you're using the same units: cm,
m, inches, etc.!!!
-
Divide the real size by the map size
-
The scale is your answer.
-
1 unit of map measure = "answer" units of
real world
-
Example:
-
real size = 860 cm, map size = 20 cm.
-
860 divided by 20 is 43.
-
The scale is thus 1 cm = 43 cm
3) Figure out the map size of everything else
-
Divide the real size by the scale
-
Example:
-
real size = 86 cm
-
[map scale is 1 cm =43 cm (from above)]
-
86 divided by 43 is 2.
-
Thus the object should be 2 cm on the map
-
Do this for all objects in the room
4) Draw in the rest of the map
5) Make sure to include everything required on the grading
scale
