Philae, Egypt

1815

My dear Champollion:

I have learned that J.W. Bankes has recently excavated a granite obelisk here that is covered with hieroglyphic writing. Nearby he also discovered the block on which the obelisk may have been set. The block bears an inscription in Greek. The Greek and hieroglyphic inscriptions bear the name of Ptolemaios (the king).

Accompanying the name Ptolemaios in the hieroglyphic inscription is another name written as .

Can you decipher it?

Yours sincerely,

Mr. David Stutz
